Two years ago, George Floyd was murdered, sparking protests all over the world against police brutality and racism. On this anniversary, local author Ty Chapman will be joined by special guest author Bao Phi for an in-person event at Red Balloon to honor the release of Ty's debut picture book, Sarah Rising!

Sarah starts her day like any other day: she eats her toast and feeds her bugs. But today isn't a day like any other day. Inspired by the protests that happened during the Minneapolis Uprising after the police killing of George Floyd, Sarah Rising provides a child's-eye view of a protest and offers an opportunity for children to talk about why people take to the streets to protest racial injustice. Ty Chapman will be joined in conversation by acclaimed author, Bao Phi to chat about the making of Sarah Rising. There will be time for questions from the audience, followed by a signing line.

To Attend: Space is limited, so a ticket is required to attend this event. You can register for a ticket through May 25, 4:30pm and pre-order a book below. Additional books will be available for purchase the night of the event. Face coverings are required of all guests for the duration of this event, and food and drink are not allowed. Red Balloon will have disposable masks on hand if you find yourself without.

Signing Guidelines: Following his talk, Ty Chapman will sign and personalize copies of his books. If you would prefer not to stay for the signing portion, Red Balloon is happy to have your books signed and personalized for you and will contact you when they're ready to be picked up.

Ty Chapman is the author of Sarah Rising (Beaming 2022); Looking for Happy (Beaming 2023); A Door Made for Me, written with Tyler Merritt (WorthyKids 2022); as well as two forthcoming picture books and a poetry collection.

Bao Phi has been a performance poet and author since 1991. His first children’s book, A Different Pond, won multiple awards including a Caldecott Honor, an Ezra Jack Keats Honor, and Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association award. Photo credit: Anna Min.
